요크셔주(州) 요크 출생.

어려서부터 초상화가였던 아버지에게 그림을 배우고
뒤에 요크의 디자인학교를 거쳐 로열 아카데미스쿨에서 수학했다.

후기 빅토리아왕조시대를 대표하는 신고전주의 화가로서
라파엘전파의 영향을 많이 받은 그의 작품을 보면,
고대 그리스의 여인상을 주제로 한 것이 많으며 또
화면에서는 라파엘전파의 그림에서 볼 수 있는 색조를 읽을 수 있다.

특히 데생에 뛰어났고 색채적인 감각도 예리하였다.
그는 또 그리스의 조각에도 조예가 깊었고 건축장식가로서도 이름을 떨쳤다.

주요작품에는 1866년에 출품한 《Sulamite》을 비롯하여
《여름밤》 《꿈꾸는 사람》 《꽃》 등이 있다.
